7/16/2015 - Power Gen Africa Day 2

Since the conference did not seem to be a good use of our time yesterday, we chose a morning session that sounded promising from its speakers - a session about concentrated solar power technologies, and went to just that. It was actually pretty good, though not especially illuminating for us. It was interesting, however, to see the progress being made in the political and business spheres for this particular renewable energy mechanism. It gave me some hope.

We ate lunch at the conference, then headed to table mountain. When we got to the base of the cable cars, however, it was clear that the mountain was covered completely by mist. We were told the weather forecast predicted it would stay like this and/or rain until Tuesday (we leave Monday)! We decided it wasn't worth going to the top if we couldn't see anything for now and just settled for hiking towards the mist until we were inside the cloud (which didn't seem far at the time). We took the hiking route, which was rocky but laden with many new plants and flowers. Just as we started back down, a drizzle began, followed by rain. We luckily found a cab large enough to hold the 6 of us and headed back down the mountain.

We wanted to return to our favorite restaurant for dinner, but as it's such a small place, with no reservations, and us 6 people, even getting there at 5:30 was not early enough. Shirley, the waitress we had yesterday, recommended another restaurant around the corner, so we went to Savoy Cabbage, where the lamps and sugar dishes were all ceramic cabbages, and the food was also really good.
